A big plate of pasta, meat and vegetables can hold the same energy as a few greasy snacks. The big meal takes up much more room in your stomach, so you feel full and stop being hungry for longer.
In the picture
- A big plate of pasta, beef and courgette: lots of food, a normal amount of energy
- A few greasy snacks: little food, but the same energy
- A full stomach: the big meal fills it up, so hunger goes away
- An almost empty stomach: the snacks fill only a little, so hunger soon comes back
Examples
- A bowl of vegetable soup with bread keeps you full all afternoon, while a bag of crisps leaves you hungry an hour later.
- After a plate of rice, chicken and peas you don’t need another snack, but after a doughnut you soon want more food.
Key takeaways
- Two meals can give the same energy but fill your stomach very differently.
- Meals with vegetables, pasta or rice stop hunger longer than small greasy snacks.
