Cam Toy with a Turning Handle

Turn the handle and the axle spins. The egg-shaped cam pushes a stick up and down, so the paper bird bobs above the box.

In the picture

  1. The handle on the axle: turning it makes the axle spin.
  2. The egg-shaped cam on the axle: its changing edge lifts the stick.
  3. The vertical stick and paper bird: they move up and down as the cam turns.

Examples

  • A car engine’s camshaft opens and closes valves.
  • A wind-up toy makes a small figure bob up and down.
