Puck on Ice and Balanced Crate

A puck slides across a smooth ice rink while four markers show equal spacing along its straight path. Beside it, a crate has two equal arrows pushing in opposite directions.

In the picture

  1. Puck on the ice: its motion continues in a straight line at constant speed.
  2. Evenly spaced marker: equal distances between markers mark equal time intervals.
  3. Crate at rest: balanced forces leave it at rest.
  4. Left arrow: one of two equal forces acting on the crate.
  5. Right arrow: the opposite equal force acting on the crate.

Examples

  • A hockey puck gliding across ice after a light push.
  • A book lying still on a table while gravity and the table push equally.

Quiz: Puck on Ice and Balanced Crate (Age 15)

  1. If the forces on an object are balanced and the object is at rest, what will it do?

    • It will immediately change direction.
    • It will start moving on its own.
    • It will stay at rest.
  2. If the forces on a moving object are balanced, how will it move?

    • In a circle at constant speed
    • In a straight line at constant speed
    • In a straight line while slowing down
  3. What do equal distances between markers in equal time intervals show about the puck’s motion?

    • Its speed is constant.
    • Its speed is decreasing.
    • Its speed is increasing.
