Drone Camera Stays Level
Open to everyone until Wednesday, September 30
To keep it, print it while it is open.
A drone’s body can tilt as it moves, but its camera can stay level. A fast-spinning gyroscope senses the tilt, and motors on the gimbal turn the camera platform the other way to cancel it.
In the picture
- Drone body: tilts to the right while flying.
- Camera platform: stays level under the tilted body.
- Gyroscope wheel: spins fast inside a three-axis ring.
- Gimbal motor: turns the platform against the drone’s tilt.
- Camera lens: points steadily at the horizon.
Examples
- A phone’s video stabilization keeps a clip smooth while your hand shakes.
- A camera gimbal on a bicycle keeps the shot level over bumps.
Key takeaways
- A spinning gyroscope resists changes to its orientation.
- Motorized gimbals make small corrections so the camera stays level.
