A bicycle is made of parts that each do a job. The material of every part is chosen so it works well, for example strong, light, grippy or flexible.
In the picture
- The metal frame tubes: strong and light, so the bicycle holds together without being heavy.
- The rubber handlebar grip: grippy and soft, so hands can hold the bar firmly.
- The rubber tire: flexible and grippy, so it cushions bumps and grips the road.
- The cushioned saddle: soft and supportive, so sitting on it is comfortable.
Examples
- A bike helmet uses a hard outer shell and soft foam inside.
- A backpack strap is made of strong, flexible fabric with soft padding.
Key takeaways
- Every part of a technical object has a use function.
- The material of a part is chosen for properties such as strength, lightness, grip or flexibility.
