A crank turns an axle inside a wooden box, and an egg-shaped cam spins with it. The cam pushes a rod up and down, so the bird on top hops while the handle goes round.
In the picture
- Crank handle: the part you turn with your hand to spin the axle
- Egg-shaped cam: turns with the axle and pushes the rod to different heights
- Follower rod: rides on the cam edge and moves up and down
- Painted bird on the rod top: rises when the cam’s high side lifts the rod
Examples
- The camshaft in a car engine opening and closing the valves
- The needle of a sewing machine going up and down
Key takeaways
- A cam changes turning motion into straight up-and-down motion.
- The shape of the cam decides how far and how fast the follower moves.
