A frog starts life as a tiny egg in the water and hatches into a tadpole that swims and breathes with gills. Bit by bit it grows legs, loses its tail, and becomes a frog that can live on land.
In the picture
- Frogspawn: eggs in clear jelly, laid in the water
- Tadpole: hatches with a tail and feathery gills to breathe underwater
- Tadpole with legs: back legs grow first, then front legs, while the tail shrinks
- Adult frog: the tail is gone, it breathes with lungs and lives on land and in water
Examples
- In spring you can find clumps of frogspawn in a garden pond.
- In early summer, small tadpoles wriggle in ponds, puddles and slow streams.
Key takeaways
- A tadpole breathes with gills, but an adult frog breathes with lungs.
- A tadpole’s back legs grow before its front legs.
