Steady Image Fades

Your eyes respond most strongly when something changes. If an image stays completely still on the retina, it can gradually disappear from what you notice.

In the picture

  1. The eye: the organ that receives light
  2. The blue disc: a steady colored area on a white surface
  3. The red center dot: a small fixed detail within the blue disc
  4. The red dot on the white surface: the same small fixed detail after the blue area has faded

Examples

  • Staring at a spot on a wall until the surrounding color seems to vanish.
  • Not noticing a smudge on glasses while reading.
