Belts beyond the planets

Past the eight planets, the Solar System does not simply stop. It continues with rocky belts, icy belts, comets, and round dwarf planets that share space with many smaller objects.

In the picture

  1. Asteroid belt: a broad ring of rocky lumps between the inner planets and the giant planets.
  2. Kuiper Belt: a wide ring of icy chunks beyond the giant planets.
  3. Dwarf planet: a round icy body sharing a crowded belt with many smaller icy objects.
  4. Comet: an icy body with a bright head and a long glowing tail.

Examples

  • A ring of pebbles around a drain
  • A snowball leaving a wet trail as it melts
