Each cake is cut into a different number of equal pieces, but the pink part is always half of the cake. One half, two quarters and four eighths are the same amount.
In the picture
- Cake cut in 2: one half is pink
- Cake cut in 4: two quarters are pink, the same half
- Cake cut in 8: four eighths are pink, still the same half
Examples
- A pizza cut into 8 slices: eating 4 slices is the same as eating half the pizza.
- A chocolate bar with 4 squares: 2 squares are the same as half the bar.
Key takeaways
- 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8: they cover the same amount.
- More pieces means smaller pieces, so you need more of them to make the same half.
