Every point on a circle’s edge is the same distance from its centre. The diameter goes straight across through the centre and is always twice as long as the radius.
In the picture
- Centre: the point exactly in the middle of the circle
- Radius: a straight line from the centre to the edge
- Diameter: a straight line across the circle through the centre, twice the radius
- Circumference: the curved edge all the way around the circle
Examples
- A pizza cut straight through the middle: each cut is a diameter, and the crust is the circumference.
- A bicycle wheel: each spoke reaches from the hub in the centre out to the rim, like a radius.
Key takeaways
- Diameter = 2 × radius.
- The circumference is the distance all the way around the circle.
