Inviting Someone to Join In
Age 7 Daily life
When a game with a ball or a skipping rope gets going, it is easy for one child to end up sitting to the side, alone. Most of the time that child does want to play, but does not know how to ask. You can be the one who notices, walks over and holds out a hand. A few words, like "Do you want to play with us?", are enough to bring somebody back into the group.
Examples
- At break time, a classmate is standing on their own against the playground wall, and you go over and ask them to be on your team.
- At lunch, a classmate sits down alone at the end of the table, and you move along to make room next to you.
Key takeaways
- Look around you for whoever is on their own.
- Asking "do you want to play?" costs nothing and changes a lot.
